A new weather platform for AB Ports Southampton

We have recently built and installed another weather pile for ABP Ports (Southampton) off Marchwood at the top of Southampton Water. The steel pile, installed by our Walcon Wizard piling barge, measures 21 metres by 61 cms in total, including the weather sensor positioned at the highest point, 1.5 metres above the pile itself. The wind generator that provides the power to the sensors is positioned 500mm lower down.

The 180 x 75cm curved PFC access platform is fitted with 10mm curved sheet handrailing and is reached by a six-metre ladder with timber fender protection and a ladder safety cage around the upper section. The platform floor is made from 23mm GRP mini-mesh decking.

Other instruments and fittings include an electronic tide gauge together with a top mark and navigation lights. Telemetry feeds through to SotonMet, a comprehensive weather information system that measures weather conditions in Southampton Water. This can then be accessed by Vessel Traffic Services Operators and other users to support safe navigation. (Image courtesy of AB Ports).
